Design procedure of a line-start permanent magnet synchronous machine

Abstract

This paper presents a method for designing an LS-PMSM by dividing the design into sub-machine components. Each of the individual sub-machine components is then designed using several classical machine design principles. Once all the components have been designed they can be combined to form an LS-PMSM. The machine design is verified in two manners. Firstly the selected flux density values are compared with the FEM values to ensure they are in range of each other. Secondly the calculated asynchronous and synchronous performance is compared with the simulation results from a commercial design software package. Finally the proposed method is applied to the design of a prototype machine. The results show a good agreement with that obtained from commercial design package
