Abstract
At present fundraising is a problematic management activity for welfare
organisations. From the investigation it was for instance established that only
four of the twenty-one organisations have fundraising plans at their disposal.
Only one organisation managed the planning for fundraising as part of their
strategic planning. It also was clear that respondents evaluated the skills
level pertaining to fundraising in their organisation as low. In the meantime
the competition for funds is becoming stronger, and fundraising is becoming
an increasingly specialised task. Welfare organisations do not have the
know-how and resources to raise funds.
This particular research developed a fundraising strategy on the basis of a
development design with the aim to provide managers, personnel and
voluntary workers of a welfare organisation with a framework for fundraising .
The aim of this study was to develop a fundraising strategy for the small
affiliated welfare organisation. This target was to be realised by the following
methods:
• to analyse fundraising by a welfare organisation;
• to determine the state of affairs regarding existing fundraising
strategies; and
• to develop a fundraising strategy.
Both a literature and empirical investigation was conducted to achieve these
aims. The literature investigation explored fundraising performed by a welfare
organisation as well as existing fundraising models. The empirical survey
existed of a pre-survey and a main survey. During the pre-survey the profile
of the affiliated welfare organisation was established, as well as fundraising
methods and models that are applied by the respondents.
On the basis of the information procured from the empirical and literature
study, a guideline for the development of a fundraising strategy was
designed.
