Abstract
The development of proper skills and abilities for the purpose of participation and
achievement in sport is of the utmost importance at a younger age. A wide variety of
problems exist as far as the scientific presentation as well as the contents of such
programmes is concerned. The objective of the study was therefore the development of
evaluation criteria in collaboration with the development of a skills development
programme for younger netball players (age group 7-8). This study also claims to
determine the effect of adjusted aids as regards the facilitation of the learning process at
this age. Two experimental groups (n = 40) and a control group (n = 20) of girls aged 7-8
years were identified (N = 60). Both experimental groups participated for six weeks, one
hour per week in the netball programme that was developed.
The results of the research were statistically processed with Statistica (version 5.5).
Independent t-test and variance of analysis (ANOVA) were used to analyze the results.
According to the results the development programme made substantive impact on the
one-leg balance skill, vertical junp, speed and agility. The throwing-skill has also
improve to great extent. The following test items to the evaluation criteria proved to be
of value to determine progress in this study: balance with open eyes on the left and right
leg, vertical jump test, both agility tests and the 15-m speed test. It was found that the
skills test for the catching and throwing-technique also contributed as evaluation criteria
to significant improvement. The study has shown that the developed netball development
programme presented in collaboration with evaluation criteria made a valuable
contribution to the development of netball development at a beginners level.
