Abstract

The research will outline the purpose and structure of this dissertation entitled: An investigation into regulation and non-regulation of the writing and spelling of Setswana in South Africa: A Consensus Theory Perspective. This study is driven by the fact that Setswana language has been written for many years. However, its writing and spelling still needs to be standardised, even at the time of writing this study in 2021, due to the lack of stability and consistency. The problem is the differences found in writing and spelling due to evident non-regulation and regulation. Even up to now, there is still variation in writing and spelling of words that mean the same thing. As a result, the lack of consistent standardised writing in the Setswana language, needs regulation to ensure ways of avoiding non-regulation. There are differences in writing and spelling despite the availability of rules for writing and spelling. Therefore, this research presents what it terms codification of Setswana through which it focuses on writing and spelling booklets that have been provided to the natives and language practitioners and are presented to provide guidance for an appropriate way of writing and spelling.
